Phenomenal growth in international export markets and a loyal following for its unique air dried pet food has seen Mount Maunganui based premium petfood manufacturer, Ziwi, selected as a finalist in the New Zealand International Business Awards 2018.

The New Zealand International Business Awards are run by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and celebrate the success of New Zealand businesses on the world stage, recognising excellence and innovative practice. Ziwi has been nominated in the Best Medium Business category.

Ziwi’s unique offering catapulted the brand into the global marketplace sixteen years ago and has since continued a fast moving upward trajectory, now placing the brand as global leader in the air-dried category. Richard Lawrence, Ziwi Managing Director, said he was delighted Ziwi had been chosen as a finalist in the highly respected Awards.

“The vision to create air dried, nutrient-packed meals that are free from grains, fillers and artificial additives has given us a real point of difference here and in international markets. Ziwi’s high quality ingredients and high meat formulation has attracted an enormous following of cats and dogs around the world,” said Mr Lawrence.

Ziwi operates in 17 overseas markets, which provide 96 percent of the company’s total revenue. These include North America, Australia, Asia, Europe and the United Arab Emirates.

Ziwi has seen its international sales grow by 162 percent over the last three years. Mainland China is the most recent addition to Ziwi’s territories and has rapidly become a major market in less than 24 months. Much of this growth in China is fuelled by growing wealth and booming pet ownership with more than 50 million registered dogs and 40 million cats.

The significant expansion has meant almost doubling its staff over the last 18 months with the addition of 59 people. In partnership with ANZCO Foods, Ziwi has also established a new South Island facility producing pet treats and oral health products as well as doubling its production capability of existing Ziwi air-dried products.

Winners of the New Zealand International Business Awards will be announced at a black tie ceremony at SKYCITY Auckland on 8 November 2018.
